As the fourth of the original thirteen colonies, Georgia is one of the oldest states in the nation and has played a major role in the history of the United States. Perhaps it is no surprise, then, that the Peach State's educational tradition is notable as well The state's first university was founded more than two hundred years ago, in 1785. According to Encarta, Georgia's educational system has expanded significantly since then. In 2004, it held 74 public and 50 private institutions of higher learning. Perhaps it is this diversity that attracts many students each year to Georgia schools.
